What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

A Psychiatrist is a doctor who has completed his MBBS and later, has done MD in Psychiatry. They have obtained knowledge about the structure and functions of various parts of brain, given their medical background. They also are acquainted with psychotherapeutic techniques. Psychiatrists can prescribe medicines. Psychologists pursue a Bachelor's and a Master of Arts in Psychology. Some even pursue PhD in Psychology. They are well versed with psychotherapeutic techniques and also carry out various psychometric testing. However, they cannot prescribe medicines.

How long does a session with a psychiatrist last?

This always depends upon the case. Ideally, a session should last for anything from 30 to 40 minutes. Longer sessions tend to dilute the intensity of the session and the goal of that particular session is not achieved.

Are there side effects of psychiatric medicines?

There can be mild side effects like gastrointestinal problems (similar to antibiotics ). Other side effects like sleepiness can be overcome with time as the body adjusts to the new chemical in a week or so.

Will people think I am mad to consult a psychiatrist?

No, seeking help from a psychiatrist doesn't mean you're "mad." Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and consulting a psychiatrist is a brave and responsible step. The focus is on understanding and improving your mental well-being, just as you would seek help for physical health concerns.
